To demonstrate the theme of Ray Bradbury’s classic novel, matchbook striking paper was screen printed onto the spine as well as an embedded matchstick into the cover of this book design. The design went viral, with over 900,000 views and more importantly, multiple job offers for the student.

Special 3-D glasses are sporadically handed out to random customers, where once worn, reveals off-the-menu offerings on an otherwise blank menu board.

Solution:

Discrete job postings for a seasonal hotel caretaker position are posted to job sites like Monster and Hotjobs. Visitors are sent to a site for The Overlook Hotel where they are instructed to apply and tell more about themselves. When the visitor types in the box, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” is all that can be typed. When submitted, you are linked to the 35th anniversary DVD.

Solution: The One Memorial

As the ultimate gesture of unity,
the concept is to create a communal memorial/urn where people can opt in to have their ashes stored with people from all walks of life.
This monument would stand as a symbol of unity and equality under all humankind.

Assignment: The Thinkery is a place of creative exploration and innovation for kids. How can children take this notion outside of the walls of the Thinkery itself?

Insight: Inspired by the notion that kids are sometimes more interested in the box for a toy than the toy itself, is there an idea in making a box the actual toy?

Solution: The BOXPACK

The BoxPack is a prototype concept where a backpack doubles as an innovative yet simple, transformable toy. The BoxPack inspires and challenges the imagination of a child to create any number of objects out of the box, while serving a practical and dual purpose of being a backpack.

Raise awareness of the gender pay gap in the United States.

Solution:

The campaign strategy and insight was based off of the statistic that among full-time, year-around workers, female employees are typically paid 78% of what men are paid. A campaign of digital, social and outdoor messaging pointed this out with a twist on standard retail advertising.

Assignment: How can we have a daily reminder to people of the benefits of eating Quaker Oats?

Solution: The creation of a measuring cup with a subtle message about the health benefits of just having just ¾ cups of Quaker Oats every day.

Assignment: Create a deterrent to the wave of solicitations and burglaries
in the West Enfield neighborhood
of Austin.

Solution: A reimagining the Neighborhood Watch sign. With the existing Neighborhood Watch sign proving ineffective, new signs with a direct message to solicitors were put up in the neighborhood. Residents were instructed to take a picture of any solicitor and the image would then be shared amongst neighbors as well as the APD.

Results: There has been a huge drop in the number of solicitations and zero reported burglaries since the posting of the new signs.

Support the victims of hate protests

Solution:

The creation of Reflect Love, a group whose purpose is the universal acceptance of all people.

Mirrored picket signs with Reflect Love’s motto are intended to create a barrier between hate groups and their intended victims.

Assignment: Create an in-store experiential piece that communicates the theme of the coffee house.

Solution: A series of mugs that leave coffee stains symbolizing literary works. The title is revealed at the bottom of the mug, creating an intriguing and fun guessing game until the coffee is finished.

Assignment: Create a brand voice for Primal 7, a young fitness equipment company.

Solution: An integrated campaign leading with the tagline, “Define Yourself”. The campaign includes digital, social, print and point of sale concepts that takes fitness beyond the physical. Rather, it empowers you to redefine yourself as a person.

Problem: There are two million homeless children in America, yet only four thousand beds in homeless shelters. How can we help give every child a safe place to sleep?

Insight: Homeless children are often left in unstable situations due to moving from shelter to shelter. The lack of stability leaves the children physically and emotionally stressed. If we can give children a small sense of security, we can help take care of their physical as well as emotional needs.

Solution: Introducing the NapSak, an REI designed child-sized backpack that unzips to reveal a small sleeping mat. The NapSak would serve as a dual-purpose possession that can provide the practical daily needs of a backpack and the emotional security of knowing they’ll have a bed to sleep on. For every backpack sold, REI would donate a NapSak to a child.

Following the shooting deaths of nine people in a Charleston South Carolina church, the Confederate flag was brought to the forefront of a national debate.

We asked students to create something stating their position.

Solution:

With a simple graphic idea, there is no question about what should be done with the flag.

X-Train that communicates
the tone of the brand.

Solution: A logo that changes with each milestone that the member achieves. With each of the four stages of X-Train plateaus,
a military-type chevron is added
to each person’s logo (on shirts),
thus showing their ranking
within the group.

Problem: People today feel overwhelmed. It’s easy for us all to complain and feel powerless in our lives. How can we inspire people with a message of empowerment?

Solution: Let’s help people realize that they have the power to decide what their daily outlook will be.Those days can add up to a life of their conscious choosing, making for a happier existence.

Social media will be vital in this movement of empowerment. Pictures of stickers placed in public spaces will be posted online and tagged #TodayIsWhatYouMakeIt. Collected photos can be shared on the Facebook page and website www.TodayIsWhatYouMakeIt.com. The message will be shared through people wearing t-shirts and pins. Coffee mugs serve as a reminder every morning.

is supported by an integrated campaign across all media platforms.

of Detroit. While this is a complex
and deep problem, how can a small difference be made by bringing
the needs of locals together?

Solution: The Blue Scholar Program

As a way to build a community by bringing groups of people together with mutual benefits, the concept
is to create a program where functionally illiterate tradespeople rebuild structures to house writers. In return, the writers teach the tradespeople how to read and
write during the construction.
